HMS Daring, D32 (1:350)

 HMS Daring

1:350 scale Resin kit by White Ensign

This kit was originally released in late 2009, I believe - which is when I must have bought it and started it soon after. It quickly became apparent that I was out of my depth with it, especially with the photo etch parts, which I encountered for the first time! Also the painting was not going well, as my cheap airbrush plus my lack of skill combined to almost ruin it before I even got properly started! I managed to rescue it as best I could and then put it up onto the "Shelf of Doom"!

Some time later I had another go at it, and managed to glue all the major blocks of resin together for the first time and even fit some white metal parts. But again the Mojo left me and it again ended up back on the shelf...

... Much time passed! Literally several years, in fact, during which the vast bulk of plastic model ships you see elsewhere in this blog were built. And after feeling very pleased with myself after completing Cornwall and Exeter last year (2020), she was again taken down off the shelf and re-activated, while I was battling my way through Dreadnought.

This time, amid much wailing and gnashing of teeth, much work was done. Too much, in fact, because it became apparent that she really needed to be mounted onto a plinth and she was by this point very difficult to manhandle! However with a lot of help from the Wife, and purchases on Ebay, brass pedestals and a wooden plinth were secured to her, but not without cost: Much repair work and repainting was required.

The last of the photoetch was attached (again amid much wailing and gnashing of teeth), including the props, radar mast arms, flight deck netting etc. We had another paint spray and replacement pennant decals and ensign fitted.

And here she is! Not my best work. Not by a long shot! But of a standard consistent over the near 12 year learning curve I have been battling with her. She is finished and I am much relieved! And now onto the Atlantic models Resin Type 42, let's fervently hope she will be far less torturous a build...!
